The astute politician Muhammad Ali Pasha realized that any threat to the sources of the Nile in Africa meant a threat to the existence of Egypt itself, especially with the increasing international ambitions in those lands. Therefore, he embarked on a military campaign to conquer those areas and annex them to Egypt, and introduced civilization and law to those areas, making Egyptian possessions extend to the equator. But with England's occupation of Egypt in 1882 AD and the outbreak of the Mahdavian Revolution, Egypt began to lose its control over Sudan. The situation worsened due to the wrong method followed by England in managing the crisis, and Egypt almost lost all of Sudan. After several battles, the situation stabilized and new conflicts began between Egypt, which had the right, and England, which claimed its right to rule Sudan. عمر طوسون هو أحد أهم رواد الإصلاح والنهضة في مصر أوائل القرن العشرين، وله إسهامات بارزة في المجالات العلمية والعملية. اشتهر بتأريخ الأحداث التاريخية المصرية وتقديم دراسات أثرية رائدة، كما أسهم في اكتشاف العديد من الآثار مثل رأس تمثال الإسكندر الأكبر. ولد في الإسكندرية عام 1872م ونشأ يتيم الأب، حيث تولت جدته تربيته قبل أن يكمل تعليمه في سويسرا ويزور العديد من البلدان الأوروبية. عُرف بأعماله الخيرية الواسعة التي شملت جمعيات إسلامية وقبطية، ودعمه للمقاومة الليبية العثمانية ضد الغزو الإيطالي، بالإضافة إلى نشاطاته الاقتصادية كرئيس للجمعية الزراعية الملكية. توفي عام 1944م عن عمر يناهز الثانية والسبعين.
